What Were the working conditions like?
Rural Life
Life was very tough for farmers, they worked throughout the whole year and because their crops were around the yellow river they were under the constant threat of the river overflowing onto their land, some years there would be foods and others there would be severe droughts meaning they could not water their crops. Most of the farmers were poor and had to do most of the work by hand as there were limited machines to help them and they couldn’t afford them unlike richer farmers who had oxen to plough the fields, but in the warring states period more iron tools were made to help farmers. Farmers had to work day to night and usually didn’t even own the land they farmed. Because most men had to join the army there weren’t may people to work on the farm so families all help out. For one month each year all men apart from nobles and officials had to work for the government.
City Life
But for people living in the city the conditions were quite good as the city was organised and had main streets protected by walls although most people still lived in rural areas. The streets were busy and very noisy as the city was the center of trade, packed with merchants selling selling goods and farmers selling their fresh produce. There were many houses tightly packed together all painted different colours with painted tiles.
