There were four working classes in ancient china, the shi were the scholars, nong were farmers, gong the artists and shang the merchants. The four hierarchy were ordered in the importance and the merchants were at the bottom and were the least respected. The merchants also known as the Shang bought and traded item, they were considered to do nothing for society and didn't help in any way.
Above the Merchants were the sculptures and the artists, who were respected for there talents and ability to make useful objects.
Then there was the peasant and class farmers who were well respected for the food they produced. Peasants and peasant farmer made up 90% or more of the population although it was one of the hardest jobs. Farming was the most popular job meaning that farmers didn't have much land to farm.
At the top of all the four were the shi, the scholars were the wealth ones that went to school and were educated.
